more minutiae

I saw that Lindsey posted her responses to the questionnaire from Vanity Fair's "My Stuff" section. I love all the little details of life as you can see from previous posts.

I went through the VF slide show and created my own questionnaire from the various ones I saw represented.

Where do you live: Champaign, IL
Favorite art: Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Jackson Pollack, Sally Mann, I'm really fascinated by Tina Barney's photography
Coffee-maker: Hamilton Beach Brewmaker with Timer; I also have an espresso machine which I've used 5 times.
Stationary: Sadly, I don't write many letters and I adore stationary but don't currently have any. However, I do love these letterpress paper goods from Lucky Bee Press
Favorite flower: Gerbera daisies and tulips.
Favorite Gadget: I love gadgets! I especially love the Airport Express which allows me to stream iTunes through my surround sound. And I love the iPad.
Pets: I have a few African cichlid fish
Favorite neighborhood restaurant: El Toro Bravo
Favorite cocktail: Southern comfort, Amaretto & Cranberry Juice
Favorite dessert: Tiramisu because I cannot make it myself, but chocolate will do in a pinch.
Favorite snack: Cheez-its or Chex-mix but for something sweet, Gummi Bears
Favorite ingredient: cinnamon; it makes everything a bit sweeter and a bit more nostalgic

Favorite Song: This changes of course, depending on the day, but when you're talking about songs that inspire I would say something with a story, most of Elton John's music. I absolutely adore "My Father's Gun" and "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" as well as "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore." I'm also really loving Florence + The Machine lately.
Favorite Discovery: Right now it's the TV show Lie to Me and the blog, PaperCrave
Favorite Accessory: my handmade crystal rainbow bracelet
Favorite Hotel: I love The Avenue Hotel in Chicago
Favorite Charity: locally, I think the work that Crisis Nursery does is amazing. I also support the Cunningham Children's Home and on a larger scale, I'm impressed by the work that Habitat for Humanity does and on a global scale I recently heard about charity:water, "a non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations" that seems really cool and has a lot of different ways to get involved.
Who inspires you: strong women like my Grandmother, people who wear their hearts on their sleeves
Necessary extravagance: pedicures
Favorite place in the world: I love the beach when the sun is going down. There's a place in Seaside, Florida called Bud and Alley's where you can have a drink on the deck and watch the sunset. There's a nightly contest regarding the exact time the sun goes down. I've never won but I think you get a free drink.

Designer: I really like the aesthetic of Phillip Lim but I am a jeans and t-shirt girl who wears Land's End and ana.
Jeans: I used to love Old Navy jeans until the whole skinny jean trend now most of my jeans are Seven from Lane Bryant
Sneakers: Adidas
Watch: Kenneth Cole
T-shirt: Vintage wear tees from Target, Threadless.com
Bag or purse: Currently I'm carrying a bag from thirty-one but my fave bags are Red by Marc Ecko; they have such soft leather and simple but useful designs.

Lipstick: I'm obsessed with lip gloss and lip balm but I love Burt's Bees Radiance Shimmer and EOS lip balm the most.
Mascara: I really like this Bare Escentuals mascara I've been using lately; I have no idea how I acquired it but it's nice and not clumpy. I typically use any mascara by L'Oreal or Rimmel.
Shampoo: Right now I'm using RenPure Organics, My Pretty Hair is Parched which is not tested on animals and does not have alcohol as its first ingredient.
Moisturizer: I'm an Oil of Olay girl from way back but someone turned me on recently to the Say Yes to Carrots line and their moisturizer is pretty amazing. I don't use it everyday but a lot more in the winter. I like Oil of Olay because it's light and contains SPF.
Toothpaste: Crest Mint Expressions
Soap: My favorite soap was Adidas for Women Body Moisturizing Cotton Milk, of course now it's unavailable and I haven't found anything I like as well, yet. I've been using Nivea Touch of WaterLily and it's okay but nothing like the Adidas.
Who does your hair: Michelle's mom, Carol and boy do I appreciate it!

random facts & horror movies

#4: I LOVE horror films. Even bad ones. Or maybe especially bad ones. It depends on the mood I'm in. I know that there's a whole cognitive dissonance thing going on with my interest in the genre. Plus, there's the whole abjection thing. It's interesting to both identify and disidentify. I also love commentary on horror movies and hearing people talk about what scares them and why. There's an obvious human need to experience fear in a safe environment. I read somewhere that humans are the only species that scare themselves on purpose.

Happy Halloween!
