I am glass

I love this poem from Nikki Giovanni from her new book of poems. I picked up a copy around Valentine's Day and totally forgot about it until I stumbled across it during the cleaning of the library. I'm so glad I did. I feel like this really speaks to the vulnerability we feel in relationships. And the lines

We are all more than our experiences
And less than our dreams

are a-maz-ing. I am still mulling them over days after reading this poem.

I am glass
by Nikki Giovanni from Bicycles

I am glass
You can see through me
I'm easily hurt
Any little pebble can cause a scratch

I rise in neither love nor need

If you black me out
I become a mirror

If you open me
I am a part of a door

We are all more than our experiences
And less than our dreams

If you blow your breath on me
I can fog

Then you can write your name
Claiming me
For you
For all time
Or
At least
Until the sun shines
