reverb10: dear self, you are happy

December 15 – 5 Minutes* Imagine you will completely lose your memory of 2010 in five minutes. Set an alarm for five minutes and capture the things you most want to remember about 2010. (Author: Patti Digh)

Dear Self,

In the next five minutes, you are going to forget 2010 for how long I'm not exactly sure; let's say until the next reverb prompt. So until your memory returns there are some highlights I'd like to share with you.

First, I want you to know that despite the struggles and stress and chaos and doubt you faced this year, you were happy, maybe happier than you've been in a long time. You cut yourself some slack, finally and then went headlong into letting go of all the bullshit that has held you back in the past. You began the year with a wonderful date night, wonderful food and continued to find inspiration in the smallest places. You traveled to conferences and caught up with old friends. You recharged among conversations and speaker presentations. You read books that enriched and challenged you and you spent the summer falling in love again.

You wanted 2010 to be about the moments and there are many wonderful ones to remember: the summer road trip, the stressful and completely insane move across town, the afternoon you stood in the rain just to remember for a moment how you used to feel as a little girl, afternoons spent writing in one room with M in another--together and apart simultaneously, buying your first washer/dryer, discovering new music and re-prioritizing music's role in your life, Halloween and your robot costume, shoveling snow for the first time...

Just remember, hold in your heart feeling happy and free and alive, all the synapses and responders firing at once like the first time you watched fireworks with M in Indiana and though the two of you were in a huge crowd, you imagined the fireworks being just for you: when it was good, 2010 was just like that moment.

You are loved and you are happy.

Love, Devon
