blog year in review 2008

I think I've started about 4 posts now and not finished them. I don't know why. I've been busy but at the same time I've just been doing simple, daily things and preparing for next semester. There are a lot of things going on in my life and in my head but I don't quite know how to talk about it all. And because the things that are thrilling me lately are (mostly) academic or design oriented, I'm not sure how much people want to know. So my brother will ask, "What's going on with you?" and I say, "Not much" because I don't know exactly how to articulate all of the things I'm doing. And when compared to where I was a year ago, everything feels so different that I'm still trying to get used to it all.

As the year comes to an end, I've seen all kinds of year-end lists, and introspective reflections. The past few years I've I’ve done this meme because I like to see how well or not well my blog sums up my year. 2007's year in review is here 2006's list is here. And if you wanna go back further 2005's list is here.

The meme consists of the following instructions: Make a list of the first sentence(s) of the first entry you wrote for each month. I’m not including the first entries that are poems, lyrics, memes or photo posts.

January: I've been thinking about secrets lately, especially since I received a secret gift in the mail.

February: I think I can now officially release the news I have accepted the position at Millikin University.

March:I've been having some major problems with my widgets and sidebar and code.

April: I'm headed to New Orleans for C's. But first we're going to stop off in Memphis and visit Graceland.

May: Something happens to my brain when I feel stressed.

June: I wrote a post and it got eaten by the machine so for now I'll give you the wedding pictures. can read my silence here as me hard at work on finishing my dissertation.

August: Because not all of you will be burdened with reading my dissertation I decided to reprint my acknowledgments section here so that those of you who have been included will be aware of your influence and how much I appreciate you.

September: It's practically the third week of classes and I'm still adjusting.

October: I've been listening to The Prince of Frogtown by Rick Bragg on audio CD as I drive each day.

November: I don't like making public declarations. This election has already created divides in my life that I don't know how to begin to mend.

December: I love this time of year not only because it's Christmas and I love seeing the houses decked out with the lights and lawn decorations(I even love the silly, crazy gaudy decorations.

Recap: If 2007 was a year of laying groundwork, of creating possibilities then 2008 was the year of follow-through. My brother got married. My parents moved to Florida. M and I moved across town and into a nicer, bigger place. M went to California for ALA. I went on campus visits, got offered and accepted a tenure-track position and started work at Millikin. We bought a new car. Obama was elected. I participated in commencement, finally closing the chapter on ISU. I look forward to 2009 and am busy compiling a list of goals I want to accomplish next year.
